Time changes everything, except what’s meant to be.

Seven years is a long time – long enough to transform Clementine from a small-town teenager with a broken heart into a woman ready to take on the world, but not long enough to make her forget about the man she was never supposed to see again. A temporary return to tiny Willow Heights thrusts her back into Donovan’s life and home, unearthing heartbreak and obsession that have stood the test of time.

He left seven years ago too, for war and other things Clementine can only imagine. Coming back to the town where he grew up in the shadow of poverty and drug addiction makes no sense, and neither do Clementine’s feelings for him. He could never forgive her for leaving, could he? Even if she had no choice.

Now, she has the freedom to choose … and so does he. Every day in Willow Heights makes it clearer: all he ever really wanted was her, and nothing will change that. Not even a taste of the hell that drove them apart in the first place.

Maya's Review

This story started off quite well. The tension between Donovan and Clementine when they met up again after so many year was palpable. It drew me in and I wanted to know what had happened in the past. What made them both leave the town where the grew up and obviously fell in love? What made them leave each other.

Reading about these two as they try to work through the hurt and betrayal they feel--Donovan feeling that Clementine ran away and betrayed him, while Clementine feeling she had no choice but to leave--was heart-tugging in places.

But just as the story started going along I started liking the characters, they started behaving oddly and erratic. I get that Donovan is a tortured hero and the impact of the war and PTSD is not an easy one to sweep under the carpet. But some of his actions were nuts and I worried for his mental health seriously. And there were issues that I felt were not fully resolved.

On the whole this is a good book with likeable characters and a sizzling story line. A good introduction to this author's work. If you enjoy angsty new adult romance, then give this a go.
